Thanks to David, Doug and the team for showing me and Irena Zagladov, Liberal Candidate for Makin, around the Tea Tree Gully Community Men’s Shed this week.
It was pleasing to hear about the volunteer, social and charitable work that the Men’s Shed is doing in our community and to see some of the woodwork and artwork that the members have produced.
The Men’s Shed is open every day, with men gathering to chat, socialise and engage in crafts like woodwork (see second picture of model ship). However, once a week, on a Tuesday, a larger group of between sixty and seventy men gather for a social catch up.
One of the important community projects that the Men’s Shed supports is the Memory Box Program. Decorated Memory Boxes (first picture) are constructed and decorated for no cost by the Men’s Shed volunteers.
They are then donated to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where they are offered to bereaved mothers who have tragically lost their child—and who wish to fill the boxes with mementos to remind them of their little one.
Important community initiatives like this deserve our wholehearted support.
