Today is National Sorry Day, marking 29 years since the tabling of the Bringing them home report in 1997. It is a time to acknowledge the history and continuing trauma of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from their families since. I’ve personally spoken with people in my Mount Druitt community who were separated from their parents. Those kids grew up angry that their parents “deserted” them, only to find out later that wasn’t the case at all. And when they went to apologise to their folks, they’d passed away. I’ll never forget those stories. We say sorry on this day, but as we head towards three decades on since the report was tabled - it is also time for action. It is time for change.
