The images of those on the Sumud Flotilla being detained by Israeli authorities are deeply distressing. The actions of Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir, who Australia has sanctioned, and the degrading actions of Israeli authorities towards those detained, are absolutely shocking. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has confirmed Australia’s Ambassador to Israel has made representations to Israel, reiterating our call for the release of detained Australians, that no detainees are ill-treated, and that Israel acts in line with its international obligations. She has also directed DFAT to call in Israel’s Ambassador to Australia to reinforce this message.
