Australia and Indonesia fostering closer ties on fisheries

The Albanese Labor Government has today reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining and strengthening Australia’s fisheries trading relationship with Indonesia.

Productive discussions were held today between Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins and Indonesia’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono – following the Prime Minister’s visit to Indonesia in May.

Australia and Indonesia share a long-standing fisheries trading relationship underpinned by a strong degree of complementarity between both economies.  

In addition to trade, our countries have a long history of bilateral partnership on fisheries management, aquatic animal health and biosecurity cooperation.  

Australia and Indonesia cooperate closely on fisheries, including on shared fish stocks and through regional fisheries bodies.  

To foster business-to-business connections, Austrade will support a food and agriculture mission to Indonesia later this year, aligning with the Australian Government’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

Australia looks forward to deepening cooperation through the Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing and Promoting Sustainable Fisheries in Southeast Asia program.
