Terry was born in 1968 in Brisbane. He grew up in Kallangur as one of three boys, where his father was a journalist and newspaper editor and his mother was a school teacher. Terry attended Dakabin State High School, which he left at age 15 to work as a garage attendant, factory hand, and storeperson.
