Dave was born in 1975 in Vancouver, Canada. His family emigrated to Sydney in 1979, and Dave grew up in Sydney’s Upper North Shore. He attended Turramurra High School, where he graduated as dux.

Following his schooling, Dave undertook a Bachelor of Arts (Law) at the University of Cambridge, and graduated in 1997 with First Class Honours.
